You and your family can recover from an emergency if planning and preparation is done today. Every family’s abilities and needs are unique, every family can take steps to prepare for all kinds of emergencies from fires and floods to potential terrorist attacks. Once you evaluate your family needs and create an emergency plan to meet those needs, your family will be better prepared.

Make a Plan
In a disaster situation you may not have access to everyday conveniences. When you plan, think through the details of your family everyday life, transportation, personal assistance, family pets, and special needs (canes, contacts, mobility aids). For every aspect of your daily routine, plan an alternative. Your plan should include:

  1. Create a Personal Support Network
  2. Develop a Family Communications Plan
  3. Decide When Stay or Go
  4. Consider Your Service Animal or Pets
  5. Staying Put
  6. Evacuation
  7. Fire Safety
  8. Communicate with Local Emergency Information Management Office
  9. Finances

Prepare an Emergency Supplies Kit
You can make your own kit for your family needs. Your family kit should include at least
a 3-day supply for each member of your family. It is crucial that you and your family
think about what kinds of resources you use daily and what you might do if those
resources are limited or not available.
Basic Supplies: Think first about the basics for survival – food, water, clean air, and any life sustaining items you require to maintain your health, safety, and independence (including medications and supplies).
• Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
• Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food and a can opener
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio with extra batteries for both
• Battery-powered or hand crank cell phone charger
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust mask
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Local maps
• Pet food, extra water and supplies for your pet or service animal
